DECRAMP. THE AMAZING PAD

This product, a decramp pad, is a pad that releases special chemicals that stop menstrual cramps. Menstrual cramps hurt. Why live your life in pain? Even though it occurs once a month, it still is a nuisance to go through your usual daily activities with pain. With this pad, your pain will be relieved within 10 minutes. Many people take pain killers often, hoping to relieve the pain they are having every time. The fact is, if one takes a medication such as Tylenol or Aleve too often, their body will get used to the drug and it will no longer work in the future. Fortunately, scientists have discovered a way to make the chemicals on the pad to work every single time. Females always have such a hard time dealing with their periods, PMS, stress, bloating, increasing amounts of pimples, etc. With this special product, all these stressors will decrease. DECRAMP. will definitely change your life forever. DECRAMP. comes in various sizes, is super absorbant in all the sizes and can also be customize to fit you personally. And, no one can tell that is a pad by DECRAMP., because it looks just like a typical pad sold in the same places.

DECRAMP.      Have a happy period, forever.

Personally, this is a pretty awesome product. So many females have menstrual cramps that just ruin their usual day activity and it just makes them feel so sick. Why would they want that? This is a product that I would definitely buy, if it was a reasonable price of course. Although I am not sure about the stats of how many females do and don't get cramps, I am pretty sure there are alot. I mean, just imagining myself not having to deal with cramps and pimples is just WONDERFUL. It will just save so much energy and it will make everyone happier. It is amazing that it does not change anything else except for the cramping and every thing. If this product really existed, I would rejoice.

Microbes. World's smallest whistle blowers?

Microbes. They are extremely small but have extreme powers. They can detect the presence of a disease causing organisms by increasing or decreasing in size. With these microbes, scientist are able to verify data such as identifying and interpreting microbial warnings and ecological changes. What is amazing is the microbes are genetically programed to have such powers, and conduct in many different types of ecosystems, they ranged from coral reefs to deep mines. "this study represents the first definitive inventory of microbial functions across so many different ecosystems," said Rob Edwards. According to scientists, each type of ecosystem has its own microbial DNA, similar to how every human has his/her own fingerprint. Also, microbes develop in environments that fight their ability. Meaning, some microbes may be in a tropical marine environment, possessing abilities to fight off diseases that appear there. While, microbes in a different environment have different abilities. The microbial DNA of ecosystems has not been discovered before because these 99% of these microbes could not be grown in laboratories. The fact that little things like microbes can warn us about ecological damage is just amazing.

i say PEPTO, you say BISMOL! PEPTO BISMOL.

The title of this is very clear, I will be blogging about the company that created the very famous  Pepto Bismol. The company that produces Pepto Bismol is called Procter and Gamble( aka P&G), and was founded in 1837. It was names after two men, William Procter and James Gamble. It is an American company based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Pepto Bismol was created during the beginning of the 20th century , when hygiene and sanitation was not as spreadable as today. It was aiming to cure a disease called cholera infantum. This disease created immediate and severe diarrhea and vomiting in infants, also causing death. Inside this medication, called Mixture Cholera Infantum, contained pepsin, bismuth salicylate, zinc salts, salol, oil of wintergreen and a colorant to make it pink. Its very first inventor, a doctor who invented it outside of his home about 100 years ago, could not make enough of the product in his home to satisfy demand. Then, he brought it to the Norwich Parmacal Company in Norwich, New York where they had a way to produce the medication quickly-manufacturing it in 20- gallon tubs. Over deacades, scientists and other researchers have found out that the bismuth salicylate is what activates the medication. The name changed to Pepto-Bismol in 1919. It arrived at the Proctor and Gamble Company in 1982. It is now sold in many different countries around the world. This is used to treat minor digestive system problems, such as an UPSET STOMACH, DIARRHEA, INDIGESTION, HEARTBURN etc. Pepto Bismol is made into various ways to consume the drug such as chewable tablets, swallowable caplets, and its most famous form, the thick pink liquid. Personally, I think this drug is very smart and useful. Although it is recommended only for children 12 years of age or older, it is a medicine that help many people. For example, many travelers go to places where the food may be not clean, which leads them to sicknesses such as diarrhea. Because of Pepto-Bismol, they are able to feel better much faster. I am not so sure what will happen in the future though, because medicine is constantly having new research and new drugs. Hopefully, Pepto-Bismol can go on forever. P&G presently has about 138,000 employees, is the 23rd largest US company and 14th in profit. What surprises me is that P&G also produces billion dollar products such as Olay, Duracell, Charmin and much much more.

All in favor of sheep, say "EYE!"

All right, so on Thursday we had a professional eye doctor, an optometrist, come talk to us about the human eye. Dr. Pamela Fong discussed about the different parts of the eye and how she explores each individuals eyes when she is at work. She also told us that many people are not very clear about the difference about an optomologist and an optometrist. An optometrist, is an eye doctor, like Dr. Fong, and an optomologist is a person who studies eye disease(s), and performs surgery about the eye. It was very interesting, because she had this eye model, that can open into the deeper layers of the eye, which was pretty cool. I was surprised that she told us that the eyelids AND EYELASHES protected our eyes.

Following the lecture, we had a sheep eye dissection. And even though I have seen one before at the Exploratorium, doing it myself was much more awesome. I even got the chance to hold the INSIDE, jelly part of the sheep eye!

Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria aka blue-green algae-
Nostoc flagelliforme (Fat Choy)
Domain: Eubacteria
Kingdom: Cyanobacteria
Phylum: not yet validified by Bacteriological Code
Class: not yet validified by Bacteriological Code
Order: Nostocales
Family: Nostocaceae
Genus: Nostoc
Species: flagelliforme

HABITATS: N. flagelliforme is usually found in northern and northwestern China. Especially, on the grounds of the Gobi desert and Qinghai plateau.

PREDATORS: I think it is mainly humans, since it is a popular vegetable during Chinese New Year and many families eat it.

PREY: This bacteria does not physically eat because it gets its energy from the sun using photosynthesis.

ANATOMY: I have eaten this before, and it looks like long, smooth, black, hair ( after it is cooked). when you soak it in water, and after it is cooked, it is a lot like fine vermicelli, also very soft.

Fat choy is very popular within Asian families during Chinese New Year, probably because you say it the same way as the last two characters in GUNG HAY FAT CHOY, which means Chinese New Year. and FAT CHOY means to get rich , or earn a lot of money, something lucky , therefore the vegetable is lucky as well.

It is actually very fun doing this blog because I learned that Fat Choy is a bacteria, and that really surprised me. I have eaten many times and I really like it, unfortunately, I did not eat it this year. I think it is because it is getting expensive and there are alot of fake ones out there. The real ones usually turn dark green when you soak it and leave the water clear, while the fake ones change the water color and the product probably changes too.

Here are some of the websites where I got my information:

evolution reflection

Dr. Louise Mead from the National Center for Science Education came to Mr.Olson's sixth period class to speak to us about Evolution. Within her lecture, she discussed about Charles Darwin theory of natural selection and the different forms of evidence to show how  evolution is possible. Dr. Mead described to us five different forms of evidence to prove evolution is true. Of which includes,
a. BIOGEOGRAPHY -the study of bio-diversity over space and time.
b. COMPARATIVE ANATOMY- the study of similarities and differences in the anatomy of organisms
c. MOLECULAR BIOLOGY- the study of biology at a molecular level.
d. FOSSIL RECORD
and e. COMPARATIVE ANATOMY
I never heard had a deep understanding about evidence for evolution before, and after hearing about them, I have a SORT OF clear mind of what each evidence really is.
Along with these evidence, I learned about the processes of evolution.
a. Natural Selection
b. Genetic Drift
c. Evolution Development
d. Mutation
Evolution is the change of species over time, and Creationism is the belief that life, humanity, the Earth and the universe were created by the hands of God. Personally, I do not believe in Evolution, but Creationism. However, Evolution is something very interesting to learn about and I am very glad I was there to hear the lecture.

Orangutans laugh with each other too!

Click here for the complete article.

As we all know, we humans share emotions, if I smile, someone else will probably smile with me. What amazes me is empathy works in apes too, according to Roger Highfield. It has been reported that when an orangutan laughs, his 'friend' will laugh WITH him. Not only we smile when we see others smile, but we share another emotion, we see people yawn, and we feel like yawning too, right? Scientists call this a form of mimcry and known as "emotional contagion"- forms an aspect of empathy that allows us to experience the emotions of others. "Despite evidence that yawns are as infectious to apes and monkeys as they are to humans, there has been no other evidence of this at work to spread other emotions in animals." -Roger HIghfield. This is the first time emotional contagion has been shown to be at work in primates. This study was made by Dr. Marina Davila-Ross, University of Portsmouth, conducted with Professor Elke Zimmerman at Institute of Zoology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, and the Center for Systems Neuroscience, Hannover, published in the journal Biology Letters. These professional doctors and teachers studies how facial expressions were created imitated by 25 orangutans during their playtime in various zoos and parks. The squad payed attention to an open mouthed expression which is the orangutan's laughter and discovered that it was responded so fast that the apes had no time to think about what they were actually doing. "Results clearly indicated that orangutans mimic open-mouth faces of their playmates within 0.4 second, which confirms rapid involuntary facial mimicry in nonhuman mammals," they report. Nevertheless, it is not clear whether all apes do this, but this may possibly reflect social factors common to humans.

I chose this article because it really astonishes me how close we are to PRIMATES! Some scientists in the past have said humans evolve form primates, but is that really true? Anyways, I thought only humans have emotions that CAN BE SEEN, like we are the only NORMAL THINGS that exist in this world, but after reading the article about apes laughing with each other, it just makes me think.. it just surprises me! AND it IS PRETTY COOL. ;)
